Giving Back

At Cater, we are grateful for God's blessings in our lives and we seek to extend that blessing to others. Giving back to our neighborhood and world is a natural response. We are engaged in mission in our local community, in the greater Boston community, New England, all around the United States, and internationally. While much of this work is "boots on the ground", we also raise money and collect critical materials for a variety of organizations.  Here is a sampling of our outreach programs.

Bread of Life

Bread of Life is a community dinner, hosted at Carter Memorial on the first and third Tuesday of the month that reaches out to the folks in most need within our own community. Here, volunteers sit alongside our guests to get to know them while providing them with a nourishing, hot meal.

Christmas Tree Project

An annual fundraiser where 100% of the proceeds are donated to our outreach efforts.  This past year, $15,000 was raised as part of the Imagine No Malaria campaign which is an effort to relieve the world of malaria.

Emergency Response Team

A team of FEMA certified individuals who respond to areas ravaged by storms to provide disaster relief.  This team acts in concert with FEMA, local officials, and the United Methodist Committee on Relief to stabilize the situation and help families begin to rebuild their lives. Hattie B. Cooper Community Center

The Hattie B. Cooper Community Center is a partner organization of Carter that provides preschool and after-school programs in one of the poorest areas of Boston. We send teams to Hattie every other month and participate in a wide variety of projects to help better the lives of the children and families of Roxbury, MA.

Material Collection

We participate in a variety of collections throughout the year for a wide variety of organizations.  From toys for tots, gloves and scarves for the homeless, food baskets during the Thanksgiving season, to school supplies in the fall, Carter is there!

Mission Trips

Carter sponsors at least one mission trip per year.  Past trips include Hurricane Katrina relief - New Orleans, Hurricane Katrina relief - Biloxi, Mississippi, Jamaica, Costa Rica, the Yakama Nation, Hurricane Irene relief - Binghamton, NY, A Future with Hope Hurricane Sandy relief, Rural Mission, John's Island, SC

Pumpkins with a Purpose

Pumpkins with a Purpose is our largest fundraiser of the year, selling over $40,000 worth of pumpkins purchased from the Navajo Nation in New Mexico.  The pumpkin farm is the primary source of income for that area.  The money raised funds several scholarship awards for community service and local, national, and international relief agencies. Pumpkins with a Purpose was featured in an article last year, click here to read more.

Pumpkins with a Purpose Scholarships

Pumpkins with a Purpose affords us with the opportunity to reward local high school graduates with a scholarship for distinguished community service.  We offer 3 each year.

Rosie's Place

Carter volunteers prepare and deliver a meal each month to Rosie's Place, a shelter in Boston serving women and children in the Greater Boston Area.

Servant Saturdays

Servant Saturdays are Saturdays where our membership gives back. Usually, it is a day long trip to a local agency so the team can volunteer. These trips vary greatly from month to month.  Efforts are made to include a variety of age groups throughout the year, including opportunities for families to volunteer together. Check out the calendar for more information.
